She tugs on the thin chain around her neck, from which a tiny silver seahorse hangs.
“I should have been a seahorse,“ she says, rubbing the pendant between her thumb and forefinger.
“Why?”
“When a seahorse finds its mate, they wrap their tails around each other so the tide’s rampant waves do not rip hem apart. They are never disentangled by the inevitable violence of existence on this indifferent earth; as if they know how vast and lonely a place as big the ocean can be.
Though their fragile embrace is delicate and ephemeral as the lacelike patterns of snowflake, elegant as a braid in the soft hair of a young girl as it dries in the sun; they have found permanence in this impermanent life. They will never unravel. They have one mate for the rest of their lives.
